HOLMComing 2017, celebrated under the theme “Remembering the Past, Rebranding for the Future,” was a grand affair. Hundreds of Holmwood past students from home and abroad came together in Jamaica between June 30th and July 3 for a time of celebration, renewing friendships and giving back to their Alma Mater.
HOLMcoming 2017 began on Friday June 30th, with Welcome and Worship Service in the school’s auditorium. The service was organized and led by Ita Morales-Luckain and Viris Clarke. Jephtah Reid of the class of ’73 delivered the challenge.
The Annual General Meeting followed on Saturday July 1. The meeting was held at Mico University. Following robust discussions on the various agenda items
and voting by members, a new executive led by Mrs. Voilet Griffith was selected to serve the International Executive Body (IEB).
The Gala Banquet, held at the Jamaica Pegasus on the evening of July 1 was the highlight of HOLMComing 2017. The Hon Ruel Reid, Jamaica’s Minister of Education, was the guest speaker. Minister Reid challenged the gathering of past students and friends to become active participants in the government’s efforts to create linkages and transform the education system. The Hon Audley Shaw, Past student, and Minister of Finance, brought greetings. He reminisced on how he began as a student leader; and spoke of the importance of investing in human capital in order to give every young person a fair opportunity to develop and pursue their goals. In attendance were new board Chairman, Dr. Clifton Reid, other members of the Board, Principal, Mr. Hidran Mckulsky, and Mrs. Mrs. Mckulsky.
On Sunday, July 2, past students gathered on the Hill for the grand Family Fun Day. It was a day of food, fun and fellowship with family and friends from home and abroad.
HOLMComing 2017 ended with the inspiring Holmwood Day on Monday, July 3. Back on the Hill, past students attended devotions, shared their experiences, mingled with current students and teachers, and viewed the displays and innovative products from the various departments. There were displays from the Business Department, Engineering, Agriculture, Mathematics, and Science Departments. The Science Department gave us a sample of their innovative potato rum cream. Past students witnessed the awarding of the teacher and student of the year, and proudly handed over a cheque of US$10,000 to Principal Mckulsky towards the improvement of the school’s security system. The events of the day were broadcast live on Both Sides of The Story, on Power 106, and featured interviews with members of the Alumni Association and representatives of the school.
